I know I know I haven't even gotten the first set of pictures posted for this hike, but family is here and we decided that this area would be an amazing place to take them. I'm also going to be incorporating a fitness aspect to this blog. My goal is to lose weight, and let's be frank, I'm considered obese when you look at my BMI. My goal is to lose 100 lbs. I will be tracking my heart rate (for those reading my resting is around 73 bpm. I was at 264 when I started this blog so hopefully I'll be able to see some progress!
Now this post is a bit different from the last. I did take pictures, and additionally, some video that I think you will perhaps enjoy.
My wife, Erica and I moved to Washington state just before Thanksgiving 2010. This will serve to catalogue our adventures throughout the Pacific Northwest. Come along for the ride!

Deception Pass Headlands and Sugarloaf
We're about to head out!
Eric and I chose to do both of these hikes because the Deception Pass wasn't going to take us very long and we really want to challenge ourselves in some way with each of the hikes that we do. So I picked a nearby hike, Sugarloaf, to do. This one was UP UP UP UP the entire time but boy was it worth it at the end!

Old Sauk River Trail
This hike is located in Snoqualmie/Mount Baker National Forest. For those might also want to do these hikes, keep in mind that you might need to pay to park or get a ticket. We solved this problem by purchasing a yearly NW Pass for $30 USD. You get a hang tag that you place in your car and I presume the forest rangers won't bug you.
When we arrived at the trailhead there was one other van in the parking lot but it was a long while before we even saw other people on the trail. The book (Day Hiking the North Cascades by Craig Romano) describes the hike as a 3 star, with a difficulty of a 1. The Sauk River is a tributary of the Skagit and a major source for Salmon runs here in Washington State. There are also large populations of bald eagles. We went at the wrong time of year to really see anything like what was described, unfortunate, but certainly motivation to return!
The day was pretty clear when we set out from Everett. We had some great views of Glacier Peak.

Robe Canyon Historic Park and Lime Kiln Trail
Hello and Welcome!
Eric and I had agreed that when we moved to Washington, one of our goals would be to do a hike every week. We knew that in order to start the new habits, we'd have to jump in right away and that's what we did on Saturday. Amusingly enough, we had both picked out the same hike location from two different guide books. It had appeared to be visually the nearest hike to our area, was not so long as it would be bad for us jumping in cold and had only slight elevation changes (compared to the rest of the area...) and was listed as being hikable in all seasons.
We braved the mall on Black Friday and participated in the gross consumerism as we purchased new hiking boots from REI (my new favorite store!) The hike commenced on Saturday. We got a bit of a late start as we signed paperwork and got keys to the apartment that morning. There was some concern that we might not finish the hike before dusk fell (and the parking lot got locked up) so we hustled out to the area. It only took about 30 min and along the way I saw some towns where I wouldn't mind owning a house. Anyway, on to the hike details!
