We'll be off to this hike shortly!
Today was cold, dreary and wet.... AKA... perfect waterfall hiking weather! And boy did we pick a great one! There was an option to continue on and even camp at a lake but we were short on time and decided to be content with the waterfall. Read on for AMAZING pictures!
Trailhead map. It was very useful!
The trail was very nice at the start. Decently broad with a gradual incline. And since it was so rainy the forest was quiet but just filled with tree smells, which I love.
I love how all of these paths disappear into the forest, leading you to wonder, "Just what is around the bend?"
Snow shaped like a christmas tree!
Then we entered a cloud....
The trail got narrower and a bit more rocky as it wound it's way up and deeper into the forest. It was muddy in some places but otherwise in good condition.
Nicely signed as well.
Stairs of doom. They were handy in allowing you to just climb up, but the step height was sometimes too big for me. Definitely a cardio workout :D
This was a random patch of snow that crossed the trail. I was expecting it to be much wetter given the surrounding weather but it was hard and icy. We didn't sink in at all.
Itty bitty waterfall that, from far away, I thought was our destination. Boy was I wrong.
Streams careened down the hillside and as our trail was full of switchbacks, we actually crossed them multiple times. Wear good waterproof boots!
There are mountains out there....
Looking back on the trail.
More stairs, but we're near our destination now!
It was IMPRESSIVE. We thought it was rainy. The rain was nothing compared to standing next to this waterfall. You could get right up to the edge, and apparently in the drier season, can cross the river itself and get even closer. We were risky enough standing where we ended up standing for pictures.
Tumbling over the edge...
Looking up at the falls.
The base
It was HUGE. Here's Eric, wrapped up as much as he can to stay dry. It didn't do him much good. But it does serve to give you a bit of scale.
And Me!
Looking UP. The water's momentum gave it a good foot of clearance from the rock face.
There was some crazy spray too.
We hiked back down and continued along the trail for a short bit to see a few more waterfalls. This is of the next tier below where we had been. So in effect, we were up at the top of that waterfall.
There was one final set of waterfalls to see. The geology of this area was really interesting and you could see the layers of rock, which was SO cool!
Misty Moisty Trailhead and an Uggy.
